Film director Kevin Smith decided to turn his life around after suffering a heart attack.
Six months after the health scare, The Comic Book Men producer took to Twitter to celebrate his weight loss.
The Flash director tweeted before and after pictures, and captioned it saying: “Same guy, I swear. Pic on the left was taken in 2008 at age 38 when I weighed 330.
“Pic on the right was taken today, age 48, weighing 205. I look younger now that I’m older.”
He also posted a full body picture, with the caption: “6 months ago yesterday, I had a heart attack. The Doctor told me to lose 50 pounds, but I have a problem doing what I’m told. So I lost 51 pounds.”
This is how the film director managed the incredible weight loss.
Smith said in his podcast Hollywood Babble-On in March: “It’s a pretty intense program, it’s been interesting.
“And of course necessary for my health and stuff. But once I get to a decent place, then I can think about eating again.”
Using the Mono Diet, he managed to lose 17lbs in nine days, and a total of 26lbs in just four weeks.
He recommends only eating potatoes for the first two weeks, then adding in salads and vegetables over the next months.
Smith has also become an ambassador for Weight Watchers.
He thanked “the good folks at Weight Watchers for their app-based program that made it easy to keep track of and control my eating!”
Writing on Instagram he said: “My hope now is I can slowly lose another 10 with #weightwatchers and get down to my birth weight of 195!
“But for now, I’m ecstatic to have reached this chunky milestone!”
However, the Good Will Hunting producer says he wasn’t following a diet.
He wrote on Instagram: “So this wasn’t a diet: these results came from a total lifestyle change of eating solely plant-based foods (which is tough because I hate vegetables).”
What is the Mono Diet?
Those who follow the strict Mono Diet eat only one food item and nothing else. These are mostly fruit or vegetables.
The diet gained widespread popularity thanks to YouTuber Freelee the Banana Girl, who would eat up to 30 bananas every day.
Pauline Hackney, Clinical Nutrition Manager at Westchester Medical Center in New York, said: “Proponents of the diet claim that eating just one food for a period of time aids digestion, as there are fewer nutrients for the body to metabolise, and therefore, fewer digestive enzymes needed for the process.”
This restrictive diet is said to speed up weight loss. However, the controversial diet has been criticised by some experts who say the diet plan can starve a person of nutrients.
Experts also say it can cause unhealthy relationships with food.
Dena Champion, dietician at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, told MensHealth: “This diet would not be adequate in protein, and contains no fat.
“Not only that, but this diet is extremely low in most micronutrients including Calcium, Zinc, Selenium and Vitamin A, to name only a few.
“Over time, this diet would surely cause an essential fatty acid deficiency and many micronutrient deficiencies. It should never be recommended to anyone for any reason.”
Caroline Apovian, director of the Nutrition and Weight Management Center at the Boston Medical Center agrees you may lose weight on the diet.
However, she said: “Though you may lose weight on this diet, you’ll almost certainly suffer from malnourishment and muscle loos, and that muscle loss will translate into a slower metabolism.”
